John Teel, A113239, served for five years after enlisting in Sunbury, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania to serve in the Revolutionary War in 1775.

He served in Captain Lowdon’s Company in Colonel Thompson’s Pennsylvania Regiment. Teel later enlisted on October 4,1776 in Captain Nicholas Miller’s Company in Colonel William Cooke’s Twelve Pennsylvania Regiment Continental Line. During this time, he participated in several important conflicts including the Battles of Long Island, Trenton, Amboy, Piscataway, Short Hills, Brandywine and Germantown.

He also served as wagonmaster and conductor of stores under Quartermaster General Hooper and General Sullivanand.

Teel suffered many hardships, including being captured by American Indians while on a reconnaissance mission with two other soldiers—one of whom was scalped. A rescue party overtook the American Indians the next day and saved Teel and the remaining soldier.

John Teel was born November 10, 1751 in New Jersey. He was married twice and had 23 children. His first wife’s name is unknown. John, Alexander and Adam, three children from this marriage, are mentioned in Teel’s pension records. His second marriage was to Catherine Vandermark, and the couple was married on May 24, 1794, in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. Catherine was born in 1775 in New Jersey to Jacobus and Catrina Schoonover Vandermark.

John and Catherine had eight children: Benjamin, born March 7, 1796; Frederick, born August 5, 1798; Elizabeth, born January 25, 1800; James, born January 29, 1802; Rosanna, born January 20, 1804; Mary Ann, born May 24, 1806; Catherine, born April 9, 1813; and Eleanor, born around 1815. The Teel family lived in the Pennsylvania counties of Beaver and Allegheny. Teel died July 4, 1835, in Hanover Township, Beaver County, Pennsylvania, and is buried in the Old Mill Creek Cemetery in Beaver County, Pennsylvania. After John Teel died, his wife Catherine and several of their children and their families moved to Schuyler County, Illinois. Catherine is buried in the Messerer Cemetery, Schuyler County, Illinois. Her grave was marked with a DAR marker on June 19, 2019.
