This patriot is the ancestor of Judith Joy Surber, 39th Virginia DAR State Regent who passed away in office in April 2019. This tree was a gift from the Virginia Daughters expressing their thanks and love for her dedicated service to God, Home and Country.

Albartus Bartholomew Joy was born before 1747, probably in New York, and died in Saugerties, Ulster County, New York before April 22, 1826.

He served as a private under Captain Evert Bogardus in Colonel John Hathorn’s Regiment of the New York Militia (from Orange County) in 1779. He was married to Jannetje Post, probably around 1772, and has DAR descendants from children Benjamin, John and Martynes Martin.

Judith Ann Joy Surber, 39th Virginia DAR State Regent, was one of these descendants and it was her supplemental DAR application that enabled him to become a recognized DAR patriot.

His name is added to the Pathway of the Patriots as a parting gift to Mrs. Surber from the Virginia Daughters at the end of her administration. This surprise, given to her in March 2019, came just weeks before her untimely death in April 2019. All Virginia Daughters mourn her loss while remembering her service along with that of her ancestor Albartus Bartholomew Joy.
