James McFarland was born on September 19, 1758, in Worcester, Worcester County, Massachusetts.
He married Betsey Moore on January 5, 1778, and they had nine children: Sarah (7/27/1777–12/9/1845), Daniel (9/1/80–8/31/1818), James (12/3/1882–11/29/1823), Ira (12/31/1786–8/26/1874), Betsey (4/11/1789–9/8/1805), Horace (9/1/1792–8/3/1877), Asa (6/131795–5/19/1830), Adeline (3/25/1798–9/22/1800), and Adeline (10/27/1802–1/17/1805). Betsey died September 8, 1805. James then married Elizabeth Esther Cutting, and they had one child, Mary Rice (8/20/1808).
