He married Margaret Catharine Teter in Rockingham County, Virginia.

Sometime after she died in 1803, he married Susan Washburn on December 3, 1804, in Clarksburg, Harrison County, Virginia. He was the father of George Teter Mitchell, Jane Curtis and Thomas Mitchell. Mitchell was a Methodist minister, farmer.

John Mitchell was a noncommissioned officer in the American Revolution. He enlisted in Amelia County, Virginia, in 1776 and was a fife major under Captain Roland Ward, Militia. He also served under Captains William Craddock and Price, and Colonels Richardson and Faulkner.

The DAR Genealogical Research Database lists his service description as “Has Col Harrison, Capt James Pendleton, Continental Line.” His pension and service source numbers are *S5761. Mitchell died on April 29, 1840, in Lewis County, Virginia. This location is now in West Virginia, but he passed away before the state was divided.
