On April 10, 1782, Usher engaged to serve for three years in the Continental Army.

He worked mainly as a tailor and shoemaker for the Army. He served under Captain Jonathan Felt’s (and also Captain Turner’s) Company, Lieutenant Cololnel J. Brooks’ 7th Regiment.

Usher continued his work as a farmer, tailor and shoemaker after his service. He died on March 4, 1820, in Alexander, Genesee County, New York. He is buried in Hope Cemetery.
