John Usher was born May 24, 1736 in Charlestown, Middlesex County, Massachusetts.

He apprenticed as a tailor and shoemaker. He married Prudence Copp on June 12, 1766, and they had several children, including Aaron and Joseph. During the Revolutionary War, Usher lived in Greenfield, Hampshire County, Massachusetts.

On April 10, 1782, Usher engaged to serve for three years in the Continental Army.

He worked mainly as a tailor and shoemaker for the Army. He served under Captain Jonathan Felt’s (and also Captain Turner’s) Company, Lieutenant Cololnel J. Brooks’ 7th Regiment.

Usher continued his work as a farmer, tailor and shoemaker after his service. He died on March 4, 1820, in Alexander, Genesee County, New York. He is buried in Hope Cemetery.
