During the American Revolution, Mary Ludwig Hays assisted in establishing American Independence while providing patriotic service at the Battle of Monmouth, New Jersey, on June 28,1778.

She carried water to the soldiers during the battle, and she may be the heroine of the “Molly Pitcher” story. For this service, Mary Ludwig Hays McCauley received a pension after the war.
