Alexander qualified as 1st Lieutenant of the Bedford County Militia on May 26, 1778. He took the oath as Captain on January 29, 1779.
He provided 200 pounds of beef for Bedford County in 1781 and 18 diets for a march to Richmond in June 1781. He held office as Deputy to Clerk of Courts of Bedford County from 1772 to 1782 and was thereafter commissioned as first Clerk of the County Court of Campbell County, Virginia, for 35 years, from its inception in 1782 having been formed from Bedford County, to 1819, and as Clerk of the Circuit Court from 1809 to 1819, followed in this position by his son John and then his grandson.
