Samuel Hunter was born circa 1732–1736 in Donegal, Ireland.
He died April 10, 1784, in Fort Augusta, Pennsylvania. He married Susannah Scott at Mount Joy, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. She died on June 9, 1814. Together, they had one child, Nancy Ann, born on October 12, 1767.
Samuel Hunter had been a Lieutenant in the British army and served at Fort Augusta protecting against the French.
During the American Revolution, he enlisted on February 7, 1776. He served as a Colonel, Commander at Fort Augusta, which was the upper stronghold of the Continental Forces in the Susquehanna Valley.
