Sarah Martin Tyonajanegen rode astride her horse with her spouse Honyere Tewahangarahken during the Battle of Oriskany NY on 6 August 1777. She fired her own pistols until Honyere got shot in a wrist and then she loaded his pistols for him to fire. Sarah Martin Tyonajanegen rode astride her horse with her spouse Honyere Tewahangarahken during the Battle of Oriskany NY on 6 August 1777.

She fired her own pistols until Honyere got shot in a wrist and then she loaded his pistols for him to fire. Honyere and Tyonajanegen and a group of Oneidas founded the village of Oriska NY near the present day Oriskany, NY.

They had three sons and a daughter and became prosperous farmers with a house and barn, hogs, horses, chickens, a wagon and sleigh for winter travel according to David D. Dry in An Encyclopedia of American Women at War: From the Home Front to the Battlefields Vol 1 (ABC Clio, 2013). The Loyalist American Indians burned Oriska, including the property of Honyere and Sarah in Oriska NY following the Battle of Oriskany, NY. On 24 November 1794 Hon-ye-re’s losses were detailed by his widow to governmental officials worth $286.10.
